MASTERING THE short game requires proper training, technique, and, of course, the right tools. Our latest "ClubTest 2010" installment breaks down the pros and cons of 28 putters (blades to high-MOI mallets) plus nine wedges with aggressive pre-2010 grooves. To help your search, we recruited 26 Average Joes to test clubs at GlenArbor Golf Club in Bedford Hills, N.Y. (See golf.com for tester bios.) Complementary testing was conducted at PGA National Resort and Spa in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

We divided putters into three categories: "High-MOI Mallet," "Midsize Mallet" and "Heel-Toe Weighted Blade." Individual testers tried all the putter models in a category and reported on Look, Feel and Distance Control. Each tester was assigned a unique putting sequence to balance any performance effects due to practice, learning, motivation or fatigue.

Testers evaluated wedges from the rough, fairway and bunkers, and then hit chips to greens. (Manufacturers sent a full complement of loft/bounce options.) Panelists provided feedback on Look, Feel, Distance Control, Playability and Overall impressions.
