News from the amateur sports world tends to be energizing.

The latest sport to add a new event to the Pikes Peak region calendar is USA Karate.

USA Karate will debut a competition for American collegiate and junior-level athletes this fall when it stages the National Intercollegiate and Junior Invitational Championships at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, November 19 to 20.

The event - co-hosted by USA Karate and the Colorado Springs Sports Corporation - is supported by the International University Sports Federation.

Karate is a sport with a limitless future in the United States, and this competition will boost its recognition and enhance its future, said Sports Corp Chairman Dave Palenchar.

Some 600 athletes, ranging from beginners through elite levels, will compete.

USA Karate and The Sports Corp relied on a local steering committee with a cross-section of martial arts traditions to help with event organization and logistics, said Sports Corp spokesman Mike Moran.

The committee included: Jay Haynes of the Family Karate Center, Brett Dawson from Pikes Peak Community College, along with Jeff Cooper and Regan Salamander, both representing the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs.

The inaugural event will be open to all currently enrolled United States' college and university students and a national individual and team champion will be crowned at the conclusion of the competition.

Its goal, said USA Karate CEO Luke St. Onge, is to help grow the sport and enlarge the talent pool of future athletes.

Intercollegiate participants will be able to apply for merit and need-based scholarships that will be awarded following the event.
