FIVE gold and four silver medals earned Bandar Penawar Sports School the overall title at the 43rd National Judo Championship 2005 at the Youth and Sports Complex in Batu Uban, Penang yesterday.

The sports school, which started the judo programme in 2000, has come of age as they also captured both the men's and women's team titles in the two-day championship to upset favourites Armed Forces (ATM) and defending champions Johore.

ATM collected four gold and two silver to settle for the second spot, while Johore claimed a gold and a silver to finish in sixth position.

Hosts Penang took the third spot with two gold and four silver.

BPSS team manager Iddie Rafizal Idris, who is also the school's Judo coordinator, said the school is finally seeing their efforts bearing fruit.

"Our girls successfully defended their team title, while the boys rose to the occasion to capture the men's team title.

"Our boys are mostly smaller in size, but they have proved that size does not matter, it is their ability to perform tactically and well. ," said an excited Iddie Rafizal. He also said that the Malaysian Judo Federation had identified three boys and three girls from BPSS for the coming Manila Sea Games and the six are training hard to be included into the final squad.

BPSS will also compete in the Thailand Sports School tournament in August.

Iddie Rafizal said last year, the sports school won six gold and he expects his squad of 10 judokas to repeat the feat this year. They had also participated in the 2004 International Korean Judo Under-20 Championship and returned with three gold and three silver.
