DRAGON'S DOJO MAKES PRESENCE KNOWN AT COMPETITION.(HERNANDO TIMES).


On April 18, four students from Dragon's Dojo in Spring Hill competed in the North American Grappling Association Tournament of Champions.

The competition was held at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando. Michelle Alfonso, 16, competed in the female teen division (ages 15 to 17). She took part in the GI and Non-GI expert events, taking first place in both. The win earned her a championship belt valued at more than $500.

Brian Rae, 12, competed in the children's division (ages 14 and younger). He entered both the GI and Non-GI expert events as well. He also took home first in both and the $500 championship belt. Carlos Carrasquillo, 14, placed second in both events behind Rae.

Josh Weaver, 39, was the final competitor that Dragon's Dojo and sensei Carlos Carrasquillo brought on the trip. Weaver took part in the men's novice division with a field of 34 other martial artists. He came up short of placing, but held his own in his first NAGA tournament.

FISHER HONORED: Jim Fisher, the former coach of the Springstead Hockey Club, was honored by the Tampa Bay Lightning for his contributions to ice hockey in the Tampa Bay area.

On April 7, during the intermission of a 6-4 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Lightning organization recognized Fisher by awarding him a No. 11 jersey with his name. Fisher led the Eagles to a 161-35-6 record over his eight seasons on the bench and won four state titles.

FIELD DAY: Shady Hills Community Center in Spring Hill and the Shady Hills Boys and Girls Club will host a Spring Field Day from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 9. Kids ages 3 to 12 are welcome to join in games and challenges.

The free event will include running, jumping, throwing and football activities.

BASKETBALL: Hernando Youth League will begin its spring registration Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Officials will be at Ernie Weaver Park and the Ridge Manor Recreation Complex. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, players can register at the Jerome Brown Community Center in Brooksville.

Player evaluations will be at Tom Varn Park at 2 p.m. May 3. The league is still looking for coaches, volunteers and sponsors for the upcoming season. Sponsorships for the season will be $100 each.

FOOTBALL AND CHEERLEADING: West Hernando Cougars youth football and cheerleading will hold registration for the fall season from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday at Delta Woods Park in Spring Hill.

Cougar officials will be there to sign up kids for both programs. There are multiple divisions in each sport for children ages 5 to 16.

This is a traveling team governed by the Pasco Police Athletic League.

RUNNING: The Arc Nature Coast will host the third annual Spring Lake 5K Run and 2-Mile Fun Walk at 8 a.m. May 23.

The run will be at 5283 Neff Lake Road in Brooksville and registration begins at 7 a.m. The cost is $25 for the 5K and $20 for the Fun Walk, and includes a T-shirt and a scenic run through hills and an equestrian stable.

All proceeds will go to the Arc Nature Coast, which serves people with disabilities and their families.
